EFCC, NAFDAC partner to tackle economic sabotage

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have pledged to deepen collaboration in the fight against economic sabotage and corruption in Nigeria’s health and related sectors.

EFCC Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, made the commitment on Wednesday, 30 July 2025, during a courtesy visit by the Director General of NAFDAC, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, to the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Olukoyede emphasized that compliance with regulations is fundamental to national development and a key differentiator between developing and advanced nations. “Without compliance, efforts to fight corruption and achieve meaningful development are futile,” he said.

He further explained that the EFCC’s mandate covers both financial crimes and economic sabotage, allowing the Commission to take action against those exploiting regulatory loopholes for financial gain — including those dealing in counterfeit drugs or tampering with vital national infrastructure.

“Our job is not limited to investigating those who embezzle funds. If someone bursts an oil pipeline or imports fake drugs, that is economic sabotage, and we have the mandate to prosecute,” he stated, assuring NAFDAC of EFCC’s support in enforcing compliance.

Professor Adeyeye, in her remarks, underscored the need for strategic partnerships to strengthen regulatory enforcement and eliminate corruption in the health sector. She described corruption as a “hydra-headed monster” that requires a united front and active engagement with security agencies.

“NAFDAC cannot do it alone. We need collaboration, tools, and sustained sensitization to address issues of compromise both within the system and among stakeholders,” she said.

Both agencies pledged continued cooperation to strengthen enforcement, improve public safety, and build a more transparent regulatory environment.
