EFCC reaffirms Yahaya Bello remains wanted, refutes claims of ex-governor’s custody

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed recent media reports suggesting that Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State, is currently in their custody. In an official statement released Wednesday, the Commission clarified that the former governor is not being held in any of its detention facilities.

The EFCC emphasized that while Bello is not in their custody, he remains a wanted individual. The Commission had previously declared the ex-governor wanted over alleged involvement in a massive N80.2 billion money laundering case. The allegations against Bello stem from claims of financial misconduct during his tenure as governor, including alleged mismanagement of public funds.

A subsisting warrant for his arrest is still active, with the EFCC actively seeking his apprehension. The Commission urged the public and media outlets to disregard false reports and reminded them of the ongoing legal process concerning the charges.

Yahaya Bello’s legal troubles have generated significant public interest, with the EFCC’s pursuit marking one of the largest money laundering investigations tied to a public official in recent years. The Commission reiterated its commitment to tracking down the former governor and bringing him to justice. As of now, efforts to locate Bello continue, while the EFCC called for cooperation from the public in providing any information that could lead to his arrest.

This development comes amid broader efforts by the EFCC to clamp down on financial crimes and ensure accountability among public officials. The Commission’s actions are part of a wider push to address corruption and promote transparency in governance.
