EU backs youth-led progress in Nigeria, launches new youth sounding board cohort

The European Union (EU) reaffirmed its commitment to a stable, united, and prosperous Nigeria with the inauguration of the second cohort of the Youth Sounding Board (YSB), a platform giving young Nigerians a voice in EU policy and program decisions.

Twenty-five young people, selected from across Nigeria, were welcomed into the board to enhance youth representation and participation in shaping EU interventions.

EU Ambassador-designate to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, highlighted the EU’s interest in Nigeria’s sustainable future, underscoring the importance of youth perspectives in addressing issues like employment, education, climate change, human rights, digitalization, gender, and social inclusion. “Our main interest is to help Nigeria build a stable, united, prosperous future,” Mignot stated. “Young people hold the key, as they experience society’s shifts and technology’s advancements firsthand.”

Mignot noted that YSB members bring essential insights that guide the EU Delegation’s community-focused initiatives, saying, “Only young people know what their peers truly need and aspire to. That’s why their voices are invaluable.”

The new cohort selection process was rigorous, with over 3,000 applicants narrowed to 25 through three selection rounds. Each new member brings a strong dedication to youth inclusion, a value the EU views as pivotal for successful community engagement. Mignot expressed confidence in the group’s potential to build on the progress of the pioneer cohort and further strengthen youth-focused EU initiatives.

Iswat Badmus, a member of the YSB’s first cohort, shared her experiences, noting that the platform empowered her to act as an intermediary, relaying youth priorities to the EU. “My role amplifies young voices, ensuring that their needs are integrated into EU policies and programs,” she said, advising the new cohort to approach their roles with energy, fresh perspectives, and teamwork.

The Youth Sounding Board exemplifies the EU’s commitment to elevating young Nigerians’ voices, recognizing them as crucial stakeholders in Nigeria’s journey toward a resilient, inclusive future.
