The European Union (EU) has reiterated that democratic governance remains the most effective means to uplift Nigeria, according to Samuela Isopi, the outgoing EU Head of Delegation to Nigeria and West Africa.
During a farewell event organized by the EU on Monday night, Isopi, who is concluding a four-year tenure in Nigeria, emphasized the nation’s leadership role in innovation across Africa. She expressed the EU’s pride in investing significantly in the transformative potential of Nigerian self-determination, underscoring the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democracy.
“Democratic governance in Nigeria remains the key inspiration and the best way to build a stronger and better nation, one that cares for its people and fulfills its aspirations,” Isopi stated. She highlighted that the EU’s support has consistently been sincere and focused on fostering genuine development in Nigeria.
Reflecting on her tenure, Isopi noted Nigeria’s remarkable strides in innovation and human development. She praised the EU’s critical support in these areas, pointing out that the EU remains Nigeria’s largest trading partner and a major contributor to its economic growth and job creation.
As she prepares to leave Nigeria and Africa after a decade of service, Isopi expressed confidence in the growing partnership between Nigeria and the EU, emphasizing shared values and mutual benefits. She also conveyed her belief that her successor would continue to build on the strong ties between Nigeria and the EU, ensuring continued support for the country’s journey toward a brighter future.
In her parting words, Isopi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, acknowledging its diverse society, rich culture, robust civil society, and entrepreneurial spirit as critical assets in overcoming challenges. She urged Nigerians to remain proud of their achievements while recognizing the work that still lies ahead.
