EU, UN deepen strategic partnership to support Nigeria

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) in Nigeria have held a high-level strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening coordination, enhancing efficiency, and aligning efforts in support of Nigeria’s development priorities.

The meeting, co-convened by the Head of the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Samuela Isopi, and the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Fall, brought together Ambassadors of EU Member States and Heads of UN Agencies in Nigeria.

“In a fast-evolving world where multilateralism faces increasing challenges, the EU-UN partnership remains a reliable and respectful pillar of support for countries like Nigeria. Together, we are focused on delivering sustainable development outcomes that respect national sovereignty,” said Ambassador Isopi.

She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment through its Global Gateway Strategy and Team Europe initiative, pledging continued collaboration with the UN to create socio-economic opportunities, especially for the most vulnerable populations.

UN Resident Coordinator Mohamed Fall emphasized the critical role of strong partnerships in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “As both the EU and the UN undergo institutional transformations, this dialogue presents a timely opportunity to deepen our collaboration and maximize collective impact,” he said.

Fall added that the current global funding and political climate presents a pivotal moment for reaffirming commitment to multilateralism and international solidarity. He reiterated the UN’s dedication to working alongside the Nigerian government and the EU to advance shared goals and implement the UN reform agenda.
