An explosion at Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri has been confirmed to have been caused by extreme heat, not by an attack, according to the Nigerian Army. The explosion occurred in one of the barracks’ ammunition storage facilities, where high temperatures led to the detonation of some stored munitions.
Captain Reuben Kovangiya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, issued an official statement confirming that the explosion was linked to the unusually high temperatures in Maiduguri, which caused the munitions to ignite. He reassured the public that the situation has been effectively controlled with the help of emergency responders from the Borno State Fire Service, as well as fire trucks and personnel from other security agencies.
In addition to the fire response, troops from Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to the area to secure the vicinity and ensure that no miscreants attempt to take advantage of the situation. The military is working swiftly to maintain order and prevent any further issues arising from the incident.
The Nigerian Army has urged the public to dismiss any rumors suggesting that the explosion was an attack, specifically within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council. Authorities confirmed that the explosion was an isolated incident caused by environmental factors and not a result of hostile actions. The situation has been brought under control, and normalcy has been restored in the area.
Residents are urged to remain calm and to follow official updates from the military and local authorities. The Army has assured that additional measures are in place to maintain security in the affected region.
