In a significant move towards enhancing Nigeria’s energy infrastructure, the Federal Government has commissioned 12 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Abuja and Lagos. The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, led the inauguration of several NNPC Retail CNG stations in Abuja as part of the nationwide initiative.

The simultaneous commissioning of these CNG stations marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to provide cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable energy sources for its citizens. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce the country’s carbon footprint and reliance on traditional fossil fuels.

The event in Abuja was graced by high-profile attendees, including the Board Chairman of NNPC Ltd, Chief Pius Akinyelure; the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd, Mallam Mele Kyari; and the Chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Gas and Petroleum Downstream. Senior management officials from NNPC and other dignitaries were also present, underscoring the importance of this development in the nation’s energy sector.

In his address, Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo emphasized the government’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s energy sources and promoting the use of environmentally friendly alternatives. “The commissioning of these CNG stations is a testament to our dedication to delivering a cleaner and more cost-effective energy solution for all Nigerians. This move will not only provide economic benefits but also contribute significantly to our environmental sustainability goals,” he stated.

Chief Pius Akinyelure highlighted the strategic importance of the new CNG stations in reducing transportation costs and enhancing energy security. “By increasing the availability of CNG, we are providing Nigerians with a more affordable fuel option and reducing our dependence on imported fuels. This is a critical step towards achieving energy self-sufficiency,” he said.

Mallam Mele Kyari, in his remarks, reiterated NNPC’s commitment to supporting the government’s energy policies and initiatives. He noted that the commissioning of the CNG stations aligns with NNPC’s vision of transforming the Nigerian energy landscape. “Our goal is to make CNG widely accessible and affordable for all Nigerians, thereby driving economic growth and environmental sustainability,” Kyari added.

The launch of these CNG stations is expected to pave the way for further investments in the country’s gas infrastructure, fostering economic growth and creating job opportunities. As Nigeria continues to explore alternative energy sources, the commissioning of the CNG stations represents a crucial step in the nation’s journey towards a sustainable energy future.
