In response to worsening flood conditions across the country, the Federal Government has mandated the relocation of at-risk populations from floodplains.
In a public advisory issued Wednesday, Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Lawal emphasized the urgency of the situation: “Given the escalating threat of flooding due to recent forecasts, we urge States, Local Governments, stakeholders, and all citizens to relocate vulnerable populations from floodplains.”
The advisory also includes critical safety measures: “Avoid travel to flood-prone areas; adhere to evacuation orders; clear drainage systems; and avoid crossing heavy run-off flows and cut-off highways. Stay informed through official channels and follow flood forecasts and alerts. Report all flooding incidents promptly.”
Minister Lawal assured that the Ministry is working collaboratively with State Governments, NEMA, and international partners to mitigate flooding impacts and support affected communities. He stated, “Our commitment to flood disaster management is steadfast.”
Lawal expressed condolences to families affected by flooding and urged citizens to take necessary precautions and adhere to safety guidelines.
The 2024 flood season has been notably severe, with unprecedented flooding reported across many states. NEMA has indicated that over 1 million people have been impacted, resulting in thousands of displacements and significant property damage.
In response, the Federal Ministry of Environment took proactive measures, including issuing early warnings and urging state governments to implement flood awareness campaigns. The Ministry had advised on March 27, 2024, to clear drainage systems and relocate vulnerable populations. A recent flood alert on September 4 identified 21 states as high-risk zones, prompting immediate action from the Ministry.
Minister Lawal also addressed the crisis at Alau Dam in Borno State, describing the situation as a tragedy. He affirmed that efforts are underway in coordination with the Borno State Government to support affected communities and urged stakeholders to contribute to recovery efforts.
The Minister concluded with a call for continued vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines to minimize the impacts of flooding.
