FG to implement automated border management to curb cross-border banditry

The Federal Government has announced plans to address cross-border banditry and irregular migration through the implementation of automated border management solutions across Nigeria’s extensive borders.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed this on Thursday in Abuja after inspecting the e-border management centre and the Command and Control Centre for electronic gates at airports. The Minister noted that while the e-Border project is over 60% complete, the e-Gates Command and Control Centre is fully operational and ready for commissioning by President Bola Tinubu. Both centres are located at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists, Dr. Tunji-Ojo stated, “We have made significant progress with our border management solutions. The Command and Control Centre for the e-Gates is complete, and our surveillance systems are now capable of real-time monitoring of our borders. By October, Phase 1 of the border surveillance system will be finished, allowing us to view activities kilometers away from the border before individuals even enter Nigeria.”

The Minister emphasized the comprehensive approach to securing not only air borders but also the more porous land and sea borders. The new system includes features enabling border area residents to report emergencies directly, ensuring prompt action.

“Our objective is to make our borders interactive and secure. President Tinubu believes that a secure border translates to a secure nation. We are committed to making Nigeria safe, ensuring that citizens can rest easy,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo added.

Additionally, the Command and Control Centre for the e-Gates is awaiting the President’s commissioning. “The project is complete and ready for Mr. President’s inspection. The media has seen the readiness of the facility,” the Minister stated.

Comptroller General of Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, confirmed that NIS officers are undergoing extensive training on the new e-solutions. “We are over 60% through with the border management solutions, and our personnel are well-prepared and motivated,” she said. The NIS has also initiated communication lines with border communities to enhance collaboration and information sharing.

The Federal Government’s commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders marks a significant step in combating illegal activities and ensuring national security.
