In a significant development for sports growth in Nigeria, Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, has announced that the federal government will emphasize the integration of entertainment and culture into the forefront of sports development. The Minister made this statement during a reception ceremony organized by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) for National Basketball Association (NBA) legends Lisa Leslie and Chinenye Ogwumike in Abuja on Tuesday evening.
Minister Enoh highlighted the importance of cultural exchange in the sports sector, emphasizing that collaboration between entertainment, culture, and sports is crucial for substantial improvement. He expressed his commitment to promoting this holistic approach, noting that the presence of the NBA legends in Nigeria serves to reinforce cultural, social, political, and economic ties between the U.S. and Africa.
During the ceremony, Senator Enoh stated, “It is not just about their talent but collaborating cultural exchange; the sports sector will not have made significant improvement without a combination of entertainment and culture of our people, and I am here to promote that.”

Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, also underscored the importance of the diaspora component in sports development. She asserted that harnessing the diaspora’s knowledge, expertise, skills, and investment is crucial for the advancement of sports in Nigeria. Dabiri-Erewa emphasized that the involvement of diasporas, like NBA legends Leslie and Chinenye, would contribute significantly to the growth of sports talent not only in Nigeria but across Africa.
Leslie and Chinenye, who are members of President Joe Biden’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States, were commended for their passion to nurture sports talents in Africa. Dabiri-Erewa described them as strategic and vital for the progress of sports development in Nigeria due to their embedded skills and resources for grooming homegrown talents.
Gbemisola Abudu, NBA Vice-President Africa, expressed gratitude for the presence of the NBA legends in Nigeria and highlighted the immense talent pool in the country. She acknowledged Nigeria’s historical contributions to the NBA and WNBA, citing the high number of players of Nigerian descent in both leagues.
In attendance at the reception, Mr. Tochukwu Ebere, Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, lauded the achievements of Leslie and Chinenye, celebrating their doggedness and recognizing their impact as beacons of inspiration. Ambassador Samson Itegboje, representing the Minister of Foreign Affairs, also commended NiDCOM for organizing the event to honor the legends, describing Leslie and Chinenye as examples of unparalleled success and inspiration globally.
