The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Minister of Environment Mallam Balarabe Lawal, has called on NGOs to collaborate in raising awareness on the circular economy, emphasizing its role in sustainable development. Lawal, represented by NESREA Director General Dr. Innocent Barikor, delivered the remarks at an NGO sensitization event organized by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) with EU support in Abuja.
The Minister highlighted the circular economy’s potential for sustainable growth, implemented in Nigeria through the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program. Lawal stressed the importance of combating single-use plastics and noted the government’s progress in developing policy frameworks, such as the Draft National Guidelines for EPR in plastic packaging and the Draft National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations, both slated for 2024.
He urged NGOs to lead community education on the circular economy, advocating for practices that reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. “As community leaders, NGOs are pivotal in championing sustainable practices and inspiring behavioral change,” he noted.
EU facilitator Mrs. Agharese Onaghiase presented on key strategies for implementing the circular economy, underscoring the value of product redesign, waste reduction, and community-driven innovation. She encouraged NGOs to partner with authorities and support economic empowerment efforts to advance these principles at the grassroots level.
