FG urges Nigerians abroad to register with embassies for timely assistance

The Federal Government has advised Nigerians traveling abroad to register with Nigerian embassies and consulates in their host countries to enable timely support during emergencies and prevent misinformation.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Dunoma, gave the advice while receiving a delegation from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association of Nigeria (DICAN), led by its Chairman, Frederick Idehai.

Citing a recent case involving Nigerians stranded in the Central African Republic, Dunoma stressed that early registration with Nigerian missions is crucial for effective consular intervention. He noted that failure to inform the ministry or its missions often hampers rescue efforts and leaves room for misrepresentation of government actions.

“It is important that Nigerians make their presence known to the Nigerian mission upon arrival, not when issues arise,” Dunoma said. “This simple act can ensure swift assistance and reduce the spread of misinformation.”

He called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry and DICAN to tackle misinformation and promote accurate narratives about Nigeria’s role in international affairs. Dunoma commended DICAN for organizing its recent Diplomatic, Security and International Conference, which brought together over 70 stakeholders from the diplomatic, security, academic, and civil society communities.

The Permanent Secretary noted that the conference significantly contributed to conversations on global security and the implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 4Ds foreign policy strategy.

Presenting an award of excellence to the Permanent Secretary, DICAN Chairman Frederick Idehai acknowledged Dunoma’s commitment to fostering a positive image of Nigeria and appealed for continued support towards the association’s initiatives.
