French Embassy advocates for equal prize money for male and female athletes

The Embassy of France in Nigeria has embarked on a campaign to raise awareness about the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will be hosted in Paris this summer.

During discussions about the Games, Jean Francois Hasperue, the Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of France to Nigeria and ECOWAS, emphasized the importance of ending the disparity in prize money between male and female athletes.

At the launch event of the digital exhibition “Sport and Women’s Bodies,” sponsored by the Embassy and celebrating the connection between sports and the female body, two talented Nigerian digital artists, Ms. Tiolu Yoloye and Mr. Babalola Oluwafemi, showcased their creative works. Hasperue highlighted the challenges faced by women in sports, including the undue focus on appearance over performance, which not only burdens female athletes mentally but also detracts from their exceptional skills and dedication.

He stressed the need to recognize and appreciate the diversity of body shapes, acknowledging their unique strengths, and advocating for a more inclusive understanding of the athlete’s body as a tool and vehicle. Hasperue pointed out that despite significant progress, female athletes still encounter disparities in pay, sponsorship, and media coverage, a matter close to the heart of French feminist diplomacy.

The Embassy plans to broadcast a documentary on this issue on March 26 at the French Institute as part of their global efforts to address gender inequality in sports. Hasperue urged for the reduction of these disparities not only for the sake of justice but also as a crucial step towards creating an environment where women can fully realize their potential in the sporting world.

He called for celebrating the achievements of female athletes, citing examples such as Serena Williams, Laure Manaudou, Simone Biles, and Nigerian champions like Tobi Amusan and Ejike Lucy. The exhibition, a collaborative effort between artists, Embassy teams, and the Discovery Museum Abuja, aims to celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of female athletes across various disciplines.

Through digital art, the exhibition invites viewers to contemplate the challenges, triumphs, and societal expectations faced by female athletes, challenging traditional narratives and advocating for inclusivity. It serves as a platform to inspire conversations, promote inclusion, and catalyze change in how women in sports are perceived, celebrated, and supported globally.
