The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has directed the activation of the penalty points system to enhance compliance with traffic laws and reduce road crashes.
According to Corps Public Education Officer FRSC Headquarters, Abuja Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, under this system, drivers who commit traffic offences will accrue penalty points, which could lead to warnings, licence suspension, or permanent revocation. Drivers accumulating 10-14 points will receive a warning, those with 15-20 points will have their licences suspended, while 21 points will result in complete licence withdrawal.
Examples of offences include driving without a valid licence (10 points, ₦10,000 fine), speeding (5 points, ₦5,000 fine), driving under the influence (5 points, ₦5,000 fine), and dangerous driving (10 points, ₦50,000 fine).
The FRSC stated that these records will also be shared with foreign authorities for Nigerians applying for international driving permits. This move reinforces the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safer roads in Nigeria.
