FRSC clarifies CBD incident, denies misconduct by personnel

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has responded to a viral video and public concerns surrounding an incident involving one of its patrol teams in Abuja’s Central Business District on April 16, 2026.

In an official statement, the Corps explained that the encounter occurred during a routine traffic enforcement operation by its RS7.14 Central Business District Unit Command. According to the FRSC, the vehicle in question was lawfully stopped for observable traffic violations, including overloading and failure to comply with seatbelt regulations.

The statement noted that the situation escalated when the driver allegedly refused to comply with lawful directives, creating a scene that attracted public attention and heightened tensions in the area. As a crowd gathered, concerns over security and the risk of disorder increased.

The FRSC, however, firmly denied allegations of misconduct, stating that no personnel assaulted, threatened, or used force against the driver or any occupants of the vehicle. It clarified that an individual seen in the circulating video wielding an iron rod was neither affiliated with the Corps nor connected to the driver, but rather a passerby whose actions have been misinterpreted.

Emphasising adherence to global standards in enforcement and conflict management, the Corps said its officers demonstrated professionalism, restraint, and sound judgment throughout the incident. It added that the decision to de-escalate and withdraw from the scene was taken in the interest of public safety, particularly given the volatile crowd dynamics.

The agency stressed that such actions should not be construed as a compromise of enforcement standards, but rather as a measured approach to prevent escalation, safeguard lives, and maintain public order.

Reaffirming its mandate, the FRSC urged the public to disregard misleading narratives and continue to cooperate with law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties, while pledging to uphold professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
