FRSC recovers stolen vehicle during routine patrol in Lagos

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recovered another stolen vehicle during routine patrol operations, underscoring the agency’s expanding role in combating vehicle-related crimes nationwide.

The recovery occurred on February 28, 2026, at about 5:11 p.m., when operatives of RS2.1114 Isolo Unit Command apprehended a Toyota Sienna with registration number LSD438GK (ash colour) for a Vehicle Licence Violation after the driver failed to present valid documentation. In line with enforcement procedures, the vehicle was impounded.

Subsequent verification checks revealed that the vehicle had been reported stolen, while the driver had earlier been declared wanted. The suspect was later handed over in handcuffs by officers of the Ajao Division of the Nigeria Police Force for further necessary action.

The Corps described the development as further evidence of the effectiveness of routine patrol enforcement and strengthened operational intelligence. What began as a traffic compliance check ultimately resulted in the interception of a stolen vehicle.

The FRSC attributed its growing success in stolen vehicle recovery to the deployment of the National Vehicle Identification Scheme (NVIS), a digital verification and traceability platform designed to enhance transparency in vehicle registration and curb identity manipulation. Through NVIS, numerous stolen vehicles have been identified, tracked and recovered across the country.

According to the Corps, the initiative has also reinforced inter-agency collaboration and disrupted criminal networks involved in auto theft.

Reiterating its broader mandate, the FRSC stressed that enforcement extends beyond traffic regulation to encompass national security, crime prevention and public safety. Motorists were advised to ensure proper vehicle documentation and to cooperate with patrol officers during routine checks.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, commended the operatives involved in the recovery and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to leveraging technology, intelligence and strategic partnerships to safeguard lives and property on Nigerian roads.

The statement was signed by the Assistant Corps Marshal and Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, at the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja.
