Galaxy Backbone MD urges AI-driven yransformation in African education

The Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone Limited, Prof. Ibrahim Adeyanju, has called on African leaders to modernize and revolutionize education through Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Speaking in Abuja at the maiden Public Lecture of the African School of Economics on January 30, 2025, Prof. Adeyanju emphasized the role of education in sustainable development and economic growth. He noted that despite Africa’s progress, educational setbacks continue to limit its global competitiveness.

He identified low teacher effectiveness and high out-of-school rates as major challenges and advocated for AI integration to enhance learning. “AI can transform African education through language learning, chatbots, and virtual classrooms, providing tailored learning experiences and improving access in remote areas,” he stated.

As a way forward, he recommended developing ethical AI frameworks, training educators, bridging digital divides, fostering indigenous AI solutions, and addressing infrastructural gaps.

In his address, Vice-Chancellor of the African School of Economics, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, warned against over-reliance on AI, comparing it to water and fire—beneficial when controlled but potentially harmful when misused. He stressed the need for ethical AI applications while reaffirming the university’s commitment to offering diverse academic programs, including Cybersecurity, Software Engineering, and Public Health.
