Governor Bago calls for state-level collaboration to combat human trafficking and violence against persons

The Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has urged state governors across Nigeria to collaborate with the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in addressing the pressing issues of human trafficking and violence against persons.

Governor Bago emphasized the urgency of tackling these challenges, particularly in Northern Nigeria, where the prevalence of human trafficking and violence against vulnerable groups remains a significant concern. He stated, “The focus on trafficking in persons and violence against individuals is critical, especially in Northern Nigeria, where we are witnessing a growing number of out-of-school children, particularly girls, as well as rising cases of domestic violence.”

The governor made this call on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by NAPTIP’s Director General, Binta Bello, and her management team at the Niger State Liaison Office in Abuja. He highlighted the link between regional insecurity and increased incidents of violence against women, stressing the need for a coordinated response at both state and national levels.

The visit was part of NAPTIP’s strategic engagement with key stakeholders to strengthen partnerships in the fight against human trafficking. In response to the agency’s appeal for enhanced collaboration, Governor Bago pledged substantial support, including the provision of land and infrastructure for the immediate establishment of the Niger State Command of NAPTIP.

“We will allocate land with a Certificate of Occupancy for the establishment of the Niger State Command, and we want this project to commence immediately. If personnel are available, we are prepared to provide temporary accommodation to facilitate the opening of the command by February. Additionally, we are keen to support the creation of a NAPTIP Regional Command Office in Niger State, as we aspire to host the Northern Command of this crucial agency,” he announced.

In her remarks, Director General Binta Bello underscored the importance of NAPTIP’s presence in Niger State, citing the high incidence of child trafficking, child labor, and domestic servitude in the region. She stated, “Establishing our presence in Niger State is essential to fulfilling our mandate effectively. It will enable us to work closely with state authorities, local communities, and other stakeholders to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute offenders.”

She commended Governor Bago for his swift commitment and called on other state governments to emulate his proactive approach in supporting NAPTIP’s efforts to combat human trafficking and violence against persons across the country.
