Governor Okpebholo restores full statutory rights to Oba of Benin

In a significant move to address past grievances and strengthen relations between the Edo State Government and its people, Governor Monday Okpebholo has restored the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin.

This includes reaffirming the Benin Monarch’s custodianship over artefacts looted during the 1897 British invasion and rectifying contentious issues introduced by the previous administration.

Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua announced the administration’s withdrawal of a controversial letter issued by the previous government, which had revoked the concession of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre for use as a motor park. The Centre will now be restored to its original purpose as a cultural hub.

Additionally, the Governor has abolished the newly created traditional councils in Edo South, reverting to the status quo before their establishment. The statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) have also been reinstated to ensure the seamless functioning of the council.

Governor Okpebholo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the original plan for a Benin Royal Museum, designed to house repatriated Benin artefacts. This decision distances his administration from the Museum of West Africa Art (MOWAA), which was proposed by the previous administration for the same purpose.

The Federal Government has also formalized the Oba of Benin’s ownership of the repatriated artefacts through Government Notice No. 25 in the Official Gazette No. 57, Volume 110. This recognition further supports the monarch’s role as the rightful custodian of Benin’s cultural heritage.

Governor Okpebholo underscored his administration’s respect for the traditional institution, pledging support to Oba Ewuare II, the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, as the custodian of the customs and traditions of the Benin Kingdom.

In his statement, the Governor affirmed: “My administration fully respects the Oba of Benin’s rights and privileges as the custodian of Benin’s rich cultural heritage. We shall ensure the Monarch plays his rightful role without interference while supporting the Federal Government’s recognition of his exclusive ownership of the repatriated artefacts.”

Governor Okpebholo emphasized his commitment to non-interference in the internal affairs of the Benin Traditional Council and pledged to restore any remaining statutory rights of the Oba of Benin not explicitly mentioned.

This restoration marks a renewed commitment to preserving the cultural legacy of the Benin people while fostering mutual respect between the government and traditional institutions.
