Historic Milestone: First Nigerian female officer cadet graduates from UK’s Royal Military Academy

Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu has achieved a significant milestone as the first-ever Nigerian female officer to graduate from the UK’s esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS).

During RMAS’ Sovereign’s Parade in London on Friday, Officer Cadet Princess, aged 24, stood among the 135 Officer Cadets who completed the rigorous 44-week training of Commissioning Course 232.

A statement released on Friday by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications & Public Diplomacy Officer at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, British High Commission in Abuja, highlighted the significance of the parade as the culmination of extensive training for the Officer Cadets.

Representatives at the ceremony included Général d’armée Pierre SchilI, Chief of the French Army, standing in for His Majesty King Charles. The statement underscored the long-standing ties between Nigeria and RMAS, noting esteemed Nigerian alumni such as former President Yakubu Gowon and Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chief of Defence Intelligence.

Princess’ graduation as the first female and the 190th Nigerian graduate is a testament to the enduring commitment of the UK in bolstering Nigeria’s Professional Military Education training. This commitment was reaffirmed during the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership talks in February 2024.

The statement provided insight into Officer Cadet Princess’s journey, detailing her progression from the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Throughout her tenure, she distinguished herself, ascending to the role of Company Senior Under Officer Charlie (CSUO C) in her final year. Her academic excellence, particularly in Biological Sciences, earned her first-class honors.

Reflecting on her accomplishment, Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu expressed gratitude for the support she received from family, mentors, instructors, and well-wishers. She pledged to uphold Nigeria’s honor with dedication and to contribute positively to global endeavors.

The statement concluded by highlighting the UK’s pride in commemorating this historic achievement alongside Nigeria and extending congratulations to Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu on her remarkable feat.
