House of Representatives clarifies dissolution of ad hoc oil and gas committee

The House of Representatives has addressed the media speculations following the dissolution of the Ad Hoc Committee on Oil and Gas. The leadership clarified that this action was taken to ensure the efficacy, independence, and effectiveness of the investigation.

Some media outlets have suggested a rift between the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, while others alleged inducements in appointing the committee chairman.

In a statement Spokesman, House of Representatives Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr. the House operates under Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers it to regulate its own procedures.

He said the leadership has the right to disband or dissolve any ad hoc committee as needed, adding that the dissolution of the Ad Hoc Committee on Oil and Gas investigation was in line with House rules and laws.

Rotimi further stated that there was no inducement for appointing any committee chairman. The appointment process, carried out by the Selection Committee of the House between June and July 2023, involved representatives from each state.

He said there is no rift between the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker. They maintain a robust and cordial relationship, marked by mutual respect.

The House urges the public to disregard unfounded speculations and calls on journalists to verify information before publishing. The House remains committed to transparency and will continue to operate an open-door policy for the public and media.
