The House of Representatives has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, who died on November 5, 2024, at the age of 56.
In a statement signed by the Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr, the House extends its deepest condolences to his family, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the government and people of Osun State, and the entire nation.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s legacy as a dedicated and strategic military leader is widely recognized. His active participation in the House’s first-ever Sectoral Debate on Security in November 2023 underscored his commitment to advancing the Nigerian Army and addressing critical security challenges.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, expressed shock at the news, calling it a monumental loss for the Armed Forces and the nation. He praised the late General as a “gallant officer” devoted to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
Appointed as Chief of Army Staff in June 2023, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja had a distinguished military career, previously serving in prominent roles, including as Deputy Chief of Staff G1 at Headquarters 81 Division, Commanding Officer of the 72 Special Forces Battalion, and Director of Operations at Army Headquarters.
He was also instrumental in various operations across Nigeria, such as Operation HARMONY IV in the Bakassi Peninsula and Operation ZAKI in Benue State, as well as international peacekeeping with the UN in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s brief tenure as Chief of Army Staff saw significant strides against banditry and terrorism nationwide. His contributions will continue to inspire the Armed Forces and all Nigerians.
