House of Reps denies alleged ₦1–₦3 million fees for sponsoring motions, bills

The House of Representatives has dismissed as unsubstantiated allegations by Hon. Ibrahim Usman Auyo, member representing Hadejia, Auyo, and Kafin Hausa Federal Constituency of Jigawa State, that lawmakers are required to pay between ₦1 million and ₦3 million to present motions, bills, or petitions during plenary.

Auyo, popularly known as “Kamfani,” made the claim in a viral Hausa-language video while responding to criticism from constituents. In the footage, he alleged that legislative processes in the National Assembly are financially driven.

In a statement, the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., described the allegations as baseless, warning that such claims, if left unchallenged, could erode public trust in the legislature. He stressed that statements of this nature must be backed by verifiable evidence and presented through proper parliamentary channels.

Rotimi noted that the 10th Assembly, having recently reached its midterm, remains focused on its 2023–2027 Legislative Agenda, prioritizing transparency, accountability, and responsiveness. He highlighted that in the past two years, the House has introduced 2,263 bills, passed 237, and moved over 1,100 motions addressing key sectors, including education, health, security, and economic development.

He emphasized that the National Assembly operates under established constitutional procedures and parliamentary ethics, making any insinuation of “bribes” for legislative sponsorship inconsistent with due process.

When the House reconvenes, Rep. Auyo will be invited to substantiate his claims. Failure to do so will result in a referral to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges for further action.

The statement reaffirmed the House’s commitment to protecting its integrity, promoting constructive engagement among members, and serving the collective interest of Nigerians.
