The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has approved the immediate deployment of 38 Commissioners of Police (CPs) to enhance policing and security operations across Nigeria. The strategic appointments include nine CPs assigned to key state commands and 29 others posted to various police formations nationwide as part of efforts to bolster intelligence-led policing and improve public safety.
Key State Command Appointments
The new postings to state commands reflect the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) resolve to address rising security challenges through strategic leadership. The appointed CPs and their new commands include:
- CP Ibrahim Balarabe Maikaba – Zamfara State
- CP Bretet Emmanuel Simon – Taraba State
- CP Christopher Ado Emmanuel – Yobe State
- CP Olusegun Eyitayo Omosayin – Cross River State
- CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman – Niger State
- CP Sani Omolori Aliyu – Bauchi State
- CP Bello Shehu – Katsina State
- CP Saka Adewale Ajao – Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
- CP Ojo Adekimi – Kwara State
These strategic appointments target states facing significant security threats, including terrorism, banditry, and communal unrest. The IGP has tasked the newly deployed CPs with implementing localized strategies to address the unique security needs of their respective states while reinforcing public trust and engagement with local communities.
Appointments to Police Formations
In addition to state command deployments, 29 CPs have been posted to various police formations, including critical departments such as intelligence, operations, and criminal investigations. This move is designed to strengthen the operational capacity of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and ensure a coordinated response to national security challenges.
The IGP underscored the importance of intelligence gathering and strategic policing in confronting the country’s complex security environment. The newly appointed CPs are expected to implement innovative and intelligence-driven tactics to tackle threats such as armed robbery, kidnapping, cybercrime, and insurgency.
Commitment to Professionalism and Accountability
IGP Egbetokun charged the newly appointed CPs to prioritize professionalism, integrity, and accountability in their new roles. He emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence through transparent and effective policing.
“This deployment reflects the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthen law enforcement through proactive and intelligence-driven policing,” the IGP stated. “It is imperative that all newly appointed Commissioners focus on preventing crime, maintaining law and order, and ensuring the safety of all Nigerians.”
The IGP stressed that intelligence-led policing remains the cornerstone of modern law enforcement and urged the CPs to work closely with other security agencies and local communities to achieve better results. He highlighted the importance of building trust with citizens and ensuring that police operations are guided by respect for human rights and the rule of law.
Operational Focus and Public Engagement
The deployment also signals a renewed focus on community policing, with the IGP directing the CPs to engage with local stakeholders, including traditional leaders, youth groups, and civil society organizations. The goal is to foster a collaborative approach to security and ensure that the police are responsive to the specific needs of the communities they serve.
Furthermore, the IGP tasked the CPs with tackling misconduct within the police force, ensuring that officers adhere strictly to professional standards. “We must lead by example and demonstrate to the public that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to justice and fairness,” he said.
Strategic Impact of the Deployment
This large-scale deployment is expected to improve the operational efficiency of the NPF and enhance its capacity to prevent and respond to security threats across the country. The IGP assured Nigerians that the NPF remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
The new appointments come at a critical time when Nigeria faces multiple security challenges, including insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and separatist agitations in the southeast. The IGP’s strategic deployment aims to address these issues by positioning experienced and capable officers in key areas to provide strong leadership and effective oversight.
ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the deployment takes immediate effect and forms part of the broader restructuring efforts within the Nigeria Police Force to enhance national security and improve public trust in law enforcement.
