IGP disburses ₦2.1bn to families of fallen officers

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, on Wednesday presented welfare cheques totalling ₦2.17 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries and next-of-kin of deceased police officers under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes.

The ceremony, held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, had in attendance members of the Force Management Team, insurance stakeholders, and beneficiaries.

According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the payment covers policy years from 2015 to 2025, including long-outstanding claims that had remained unresolved for nearly a decade.

IGP Egbetokun disclosed that this phase marks the 11th disbursement since his assumption of office, bringing the total payout under his administration to over ₦24.2 billion, benefitting 9,735 families of fallen officers.

He described the exercise as both “a solemn duty and a responsibility,” stressing the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to honouring the legacy of its fallen heroes by providing meaningful support to their families. He reiterated that welfare for officers—serving, retired, or deceased—remains a central priority of his administration.

According to him, the Force is currently redesigning its welfare system to make it stronger, transparent, and fully digitized, with the aim of ensuring prompt and responsive payments of entitlements.

The IGP also commended the Force Insurance Unit for its diligence, insurance companies for meeting their obligations, and the Ministry of Police Affairs for its continued guidance. He expressed special appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support of police welfare initiatives.
