The Inspector General of Police, Acting IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, embarked on a professional visit to the United States to attend the 130th Annual International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference. During this visit, he held a consequential and fruitful meeting with Todd Robinson, the Assistant Secretary of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Service (INL) of the United States. The meeting, convened on October 15, 2023, at the Hilton Hotel in downtown San Diego, centered on exploring collaborative efforts to elevate law enforcement and public safety in Nigeria.
According to Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the discussions during the meeting revolved around several vital areas of cooperation, with particular emphasis on the Special Intervention Squad aimed at addressing critical security challenges in Nigeria. IGP Egbetokun expressed his sincere appreciation for the support provided by INL, which has significantly contributed to the development of the Transitional Police Unit and the advancement of the Special Intervention Squad initiative. Another salient point of discussion was the imperative of reinforcing the Sex Offenders Registry Database, an indispensable tool in the protection of communities from sexual offenders and the enhancement of public safety. Both parties deliberated on strategies to bolster community safety through the effective management and utilization of this registry.
Recognizing the importance of professional development, both the IGP and the INL Secretary concurred on the implementation of programs designed to “train the trainers” to bolster the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force by nurturing skilled and knowledgeable trainers. Furthermore, the significance of digitalization and cloud-based data integration for the Nigeria Police Force was highlighted.
Ambassador Todd Robinson, the INL Assistant Secretary, extended his congratulations to IGP Egbetokun on his appointment and reiterated the United States’ unwavering commitment to supporting the Nigerian Police Force. The United States expressed readiness to provide assistance in ongoing reform efforts within the force, underscoring the urgency of prompt action. It was emphasized that the Nigerian Police should articulate specific support requirements, with the assurance that assistance would be provided in all areas essential for the continued improvement of the force.
