The Inspector General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, emphasized the importance of collaboration with Oil Producers Trade Section (OPTS) and its member companies to combat oil theft and enhance the protection of critical oil and gas infrastructure. This statement was made during a meeting with the Executive Secretary and Heads of Security of all oil companies in Nigeria at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on October 27, 2023.
In an official statement released by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja, it was outlined that this collaborative effort is aimed at addressing issues related to oil theft, strengthening the security of vital oil and gas installations, and promoting cooperation among various security agencies responsible for safeguarding these facilities.
The statement highlighted the significance of the oil and gas industry in Nigeria’s economy, stressing that the safety and security of its operations are of paramount importance. The collaboration signifies a shared commitment to protecting the industry and mitigating security threats that affect its stability and efficiency. The collaboration focuses on countering oil theft, infrastructure development, improving synergy with other security agencies, enhancing community engagement and corporate social responsibility (CSR), providing operational support, and implementing training programs and operational simulations for operatives.
The IGP also reaffirmed his dedication to establishing the Special Intervention Squad (SIS) and expanding its operations to further enhance the protection of oil and gas businesses and facilities in Nigeria.
The Inspector General of Police assured that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) would deploy adequate resources to enhance security within the oil sector, aiming to achieve positive outcomes that contribute to the prosperity and stability of both the oil and gas industry and the entire nation.
