IGP reviews welfare report on young detainees, pledges action on recommendations

Following the recent remand and arraignment of young detainees on November 1, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has received a report on their treatment in police custody.

Currently attending the INTERPOL General Assembly in Glasgow, the IGP reviewed the findings, having initiated an inquiry into the detainees’ welfare while in Algiers for the African Union Mechanism for Police Cooperation committee meeting.

In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the IGP committed to a detailed examination of the report and pledged to address any procedural issues or areas for improvement. In a move to promote child-sensitive and professional investigative practices, he has called for a conference and workshop on November 7, 2024, at the Police Resource Center in Jabi. The meeting will bring together Deputy Commissioners of CID and Investigation Unit Heads to reinforce standards in handling cases involving young and vulnerable individuals.

The Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to maintaining fairness, accountability, and compliance with legal protections for all detainees, particularly the vulnerable.
