The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, delivered a compelling address at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, shedding light on the Nigeria Police Force’s (NPF) ambitious strides towards environmental sustainability through the Nigeria Police Green Initiatives (NPGI).
The motivating ethos of “Saving People with Environment” underscores the Police Force’s unwavering commitment to addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable practices.
According to Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP outlined the core mission of NPGI, emphasizing its alignment with global efforts to combat climate change and contribute to a more environmentally friendly society. Recognizing the pivotal role law enforcement plays in ensuring a safer and more sustainable future, he called for collective support to address climate challenges on a global scale.
In response to the global shift towards sustainable energy, the IGP highlighted the active involvement of the Police Force in facilitating energy transition initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental footprint. As part of a key developmental strategy, the IGP announced initiatives such as widespread tree planting across all Police commands and formations, the adoption of gas as a fuel source for Police patrol vans, an ongoing campaign for renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, and a strategic approach to illuminate communities and police stations. These measures are designed to create well-lit and secure environments, contributing to a reduction in crime rates and fostering community development.
Distinguished attendees at the event included the Executive Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umar Bago; the Senior Special Assistant on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Adefoluke Adefolure, and the Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Khalil Suleiman Halilu.
Seizing the opportunity, the Inspector General of Police called for continued support and collaboration from stakeholders, governments, and communities to collectively address environmental challenges and advance sustainable initiatives in Nigeria.
