INEC postpones nationwide voter revalidation exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of its proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.

The decision was reached following a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday, April 10, 2026, where key electoral matters, including the revalidation exercise, were reviewed.

In a statement issued by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the exercise, initially planned as part of efforts to strengthen the credibility of the voter register, would now be deferred.

The Commission described the voter revalidation process as a critical component of its mandate to maintain an accurate and reliable National Register of Voters. It noted that the exercise is designed to verify existing voter records, update personal data, eliminate duplicate or ineligible entries, and enhance the overall integrity of the register.

According to INEC, the initiative also provides an opportunity for registered voters to confirm and correct their personal details where necessary.

Despite the postponement, the Commission reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections, assuring Nigerians that efforts to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process remain ongoing.
