The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) is urging a peaceful electoral process in the upcoming governorship elections in Imo, Bayelsa, and Kogi states scheduled for Saturday, November 11, 2023.
Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Director General of the Institute, emphasized the need for all stakeholders to ensure a violence-free and bloodless election. Acknowledging the particular challenges associated with off-cycle elections, he pointed out instances of violence during the campaign period and urged political stakeholders to refrain from resorting to violence, as such actions could undermine the credibility of the election.
Dr. Ochogwu stressed the responsibility of key actors in the electoral process to prevent violence and encourage voter turnout, cautioning against actions that could lead to voter apathy. He advised that the actors adhere to electoral rules and ensure the credibility of the process.
While acknowledging the assurances from security agencies such as the Army and Police to maintain a peaceful environment during the elections, Dr. Ochogwu underscored the role of stakeholders in ensuring that their supporters uphold peace throughout the entire electoral process.
He highlighted the signing of a peace accord by 18 political parties participating in the Imo governorship poll, emphasizing that the commitment to peace must be translated into concrete actions. Dr. Ochogwu concluded by emphasizing the importance of violence-free, rule-based elections to safeguard the credibility of the electoral process, urging key actors to prioritize peaceful engagement over confrontational approaches in politics.
