The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has strongly condemned the recent killings in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, describing the attacks as a serious threat to peace, security and national unity, while demanding the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Director-General of the Institute, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, expressed deep concern over the attacks on Otukpo-Nobi community in Okete District and Akpachi-Ugboju, where several people were reportedly killed.
The Institute described the attacks as “senseless, tragic and unacceptable,” and extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the Benue State Government and the affected communities.
IPCR warned that the recurring violence against rural communities underscores the urgent need for strengthened security measures, improved intelligence gathering and proactive conflict prevention strategies to halt the cycle of bloodshed.
“The perpetrators of these heinous acts must not be allowed to escape justice. Holding those responsible accountable is essential to restoring public confidence, deterring future violence and reinforcing the rule of law,” the statement said.
The Institute called on security agencies to immediately launch a comprehensive investigation into the attacks, identify the perpetrators and ensure they are brought to justice in accordance with the law.
It also urged the Federal Government, the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to reinforce intelligence-driven operations, enhance the protection of vulnerable communities and deepen collaboration with local stakeholders to prevent further attacks.
While appealing for calm, IPCR encouraged residents to remain law-abiding and support security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and improve community safety.
Reaffirming its commitment to promoting dialogue, peaceful coexistence and sustainable conflict resolution across the country, the Institute stressed that justice, accountability and collective action remain critical to achieving lasting peace in Nigeria.
The latest attack adds to the growing wave of violence in Benue State, where recurring armed attacks on farming communities have claimed hundreds of lives, displaced thousands of residents and intensified concerns over rural insecurity. The persistent violence has continued to generate calls for stronger government intervention, enhanced intelligence-led policing and long-term strategies to address the underlying causes of conflict in the state.
The Institute prayed for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives, wished the injured a speedy recovery and asked God to grant the bereaved families the strength to bear their loss.
