The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has called on Nigerians to leverage the rare overlap of Lent and Ramadan as an opportunity for national healing, unity and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence.
In a statement issued on February 18, 2026, the institute described the simultaneous observance of the Christian and Muslim sacred seasons as more than a calendar coincidence, characterising it as a symbolic moment of shared values and collective responsibility at a time when the country faces insecurity and social pressures.
The IPCR noted that both Lent and Ramadan, marked by fasting, prayer and spiritual reflection, provide a platform for citizens to rise above religious differences and reaffirm their dedication to harmony and mutual respect. It emphasised that the virtues of compassion, self-restraint and generosity associated with the seasons should be reflected in everyday conduct.
Warning against extremist narratives that manipulate religious teachings for narrow interests, the institute said such distortions threaten national stability. It urged religious leaders and communities to amplify messages that promote tolerance, dialogue and understanding across faith lines.
According to the institute, genuine spirituality extends beyond rituals of worship to include how individuals treat neighbours of different beliefs. It added that Nigeria’s diversity should be harnessed as a source of strength and resilience rather than division.
“With both faiths engaged in solemn reflection at the same time, Nigerians are presented with a timely reminder that we share a common humanity and destiny,” the statement said, encouraging citizens to work collectively towards a peaceful and prosperous society.
The Director-General of the IPCR, Joseph Ochogwu, who signed the statement, conveyed goodwill to Christians and Muslims and expressed hope that the sacred period would inspire reconciliation, deeper understanding and a strengthened commitment to national unity.
