Former President Goodluck Jonathan has urged Nigerians to remain patriotic, peaceful and united as the country marks its 66th Independence anniversary, warning that the next electoral season will test the nation’s democratic maturity.
Jonathan, in an Independence Day message on Thursday, called on citizens to prioritise peace, unity and justice as Nigeria prepares to enter another election cycle in the coming months.
He said Nigeria had endured numerous challenges since gaining independence in 1960 but had repeatedly demonstrated resilience in overcoming periods of difficulty.
“Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant,” the former President said.
Reflecting on the country’s 66-year journey, Jonathan urged Nigerians to remain steadfast in faith and hope while working collectively towards national development.
He particularly appealed to citizens to conduct themselves responsibly during the forthcoming electoral season, stressing the importance of actions that protect the country’s peace, unity and democratic process.
The former President said Nigeria’s future held significant possibilities if its diversity and abundant human and natural resources were effectively harnessed for sustainable development.
He also called on Nigerian youths and other citizens to remain hopeful and courageous in contributing to the building of a better country capable of providing a prosperous future for succeeding generations.
Jonathan, however, said achieving that future would require greater responsibility from leaders at all levels.
“To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism,” he said.
He urged political and public leaders to confront Nigeria’s social and economic challenges by prioritising personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability and strict adherence to the rule of law.
The former President stressed that national development required sustained commitment and sacrifice, urging Nigerians to remain dedicated to building a peaceful, secure and equitable society.
Jonathan’s call comes as preparations and political activities ahead of Nigeria’s next general elections are expected to intensify. His emphasis on democratic maturity also follows his recent public comments that electoral contests must be governed by established rules and that political ambition should not be used to justify misconduct. thecable.ng
He concluded by urging Nigerians to maintain faith in the country and collectively pursue a national future that guarantees greater opportunities and security for present and future generations.
