In response to a recent fatal collision and subsequent fire involving two heavy trucks on the Oko-Olowo Expressway in Ilorin West local government area, Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, visited the accident scene on Tuesday to express his condolences to the victims and their families.
Tragically, three individuals lost their lives in the incident, and several others sustained injuries amid the resulting inferno. Governor AbdulRazaq took the opportunity to caution motorists against reckless driving, emphasizing the importance of adhering to speed limits and promoting a culture of road safety.
Expressing gratitude for the Federal government’s investment in the Oko-Olowo Expressway and other federal road projects within the state, the Governor highlighted the necessity of ongoing collaboration. He asserted that the state government would engage with the federal authorities to explore the possibility of constructing a flyover at the Malete junction to alleviate congestion and reduce the frequency of accidents.
Governor AbdulRazaq remarked, “Continuous intervention on this road is imperative. A flyover is needed to enhance safety and mitigate accidents. However, prioritizing safety is paramount. The well-being of the people is crucial. Drivers must exercise control over their speed, considering the presence of communities along this road.”
He further underscored the significance of road safety, noting that the Federal Road Safety Corps plays a crucial role in ensuring safe transportation on federal roads, such as the Oko-Olowo Expressway. Governor AbdulRazaq expressed his deep regret over the incident, attributing it to eyewitness accounts of excessive speed by the involved motorists.
Accompanying the Governor on this visit were Abdulqowiyu Olododo, the supervising Commissioner for Works; Falade John Olumuyiwa, Director of the Kwara State Fire Service; and Adegboye Akeem, CEO of the Kwara State Road Traffic Management Authority (KWARTMA).
Earlier in the day, Governor AbdulRazaq paid a condolence visit to Maigida House in the Edun community, Ilorin South local government area, where a building had been ravaged by fire. The Governor offered his sympathies to the affected residents, emphasizing the state’s commitment to addressing such unfortunate incidents.
The Kwara State government remains focused on promoting road safety initiatives and collaborating with relevant authorities to enhance infrastructure for the well-being of its citizens.
