In a landmark moment for gender representation in the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Onyinyechi Appolonia Anele has officially assumed office as the Acting Director of Army Public Relations (DAPR)—becoming the first female officer to hold the position.

According to Chief of Staff, Directorate of Army Public Relations Lt Col Sebastine Takwa, the symbolic handing-over ceremony, held at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, saw Lt. Col. Anele take over from Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, who has been redeployed to the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, also in Abuja.

In her remarks, Lt. Col. Anele thanked the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, for the opportunity to serve, pledging to uphold the values of loyalty, professionalism, and dedication in her new role. She also paid tribute to her predecessor, describing Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu as a mentor whose passion and strategic leadership have enhanced the Army’s public image and communications.

“The foundation laid by Major General Nwachukwu will be built upon with dedication and integrity,” she said. “I call on our media partners and stakeholders to continue supporting the Nigerian Army in its mission to safeguard national peace and sovereignty.”

Lt. Col. Anele also acknowledged the crucial role played by defence correspondents, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), and other partners in shaping public discourse and promoting professional communication within the military.

In his valedictory address, Maj. Gen. Nwachukwu highlighted the Directorate’s key achievements under his tenure, including expanded local and international training in strategic communication, digital warfare, and crisis messaging. He emphasized that the Army’s voice now carries greater reach and credibility both domestically and internationally.

“I am confident the Directorate is in capable hands,” he said, urging his successor to build on existing successes and take the Directorate to new heights.

The event featured the signing of official documents, presentation of the command flag, and the decoration of the new Acting Director with the insignia of her office. It was attended by senior Army officers and communications personnel from across the country.

Lt. Col. Anele is a registered member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and previously served as Public Relations Officer to a former Chief of Army Staff. Prior to her appointment, she was with the Department of Civil-Military Relations at Defence Headquarters.
