Prominent Nigerian leaders, including former Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and former President Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, have reiterated the military’s essential role in safeguarding Nigeria’s unity and democratic values.

This was highlighted on Monday during the public presentation of Nine Lives: The Bello-Fadile Memoirs in Abuja. The book, authored by retired Colonel Bello Fadile, recounts his experiences during the 1995 “phantom coup” under General Sani Abacha’s regime.

Gen. Abdulsalami lauded Fadile’s dedication to democracy and national unity, urging Nigerian youths to embrace patriotism and service. “The military stands as a guardian of our national unity,” he said. “Young Nigerians must adopt a spirit of selflessness and resilience, as exemplified by Fadile.”

He further praised Fadile for his scholarly achievements and commitment to Nigeria’s progress, describing him as a role model.

Represented by his daughter, Aisha Babangida, Gen. Babangida commended Fadile’s bravery and resilience during his trials, stating, “Fadile’s intellectual contributions have deepened discussions around democracy and good governance.”
