Minister of Information condemns Zamfara Government’s politicization of security efforts

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, has expressed deep concern and disappointment over the Zamfara State Governor’s recent statement regarding the efforts to rescue abducted students of the Federal University Gusau. In a press release issued today, Minister Idris criticized Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal for allegedly politicizing the matter for personal gains.

In an official statement Deputy Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, Suleiman Haruna said the Minister underscored the importance of appreciating the dedication and swift actions taken by security agencies and Federal Government institutions in responding to the abduction of the students. Instead of acknowledging these efforts, Governor Lawal is accused of exploiting the situation for cheap political advantages.

Idris emphasized that Federal Government institutions have the legal authority to take prompt action to secure the release of citizens who have been unlawfully kidnapped, such as the unfortunate students in this case. He refuted claims that such operations are conducted surreptitiously, as described by the Zamfara State Government, and stressed that they are carried out in accordance with established laws and protocols.

The Minister made it explicitly clear that no official of the Federal Government is involved in negotiations with any bandit or criminal group. However, the government remains committed to exploring all available avenues to de-escalate tensions and restore peace in regions plagued by banditry. He also expressed a willingness to support community-driven initiatives for dialogue if they prove effective, mirroring successful approaches in other parts of the country.

He asserted the Federal Government’s dedication to resolving the ongoing security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality. He urged against injecting political differences or personal vendettas into national security matters, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the morale of the nation’s security forces and ensuring that government efforts remain on track.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s openness to engaging with stakeholders across the country to devise lasting solutions to security issues. He called on all Nigerians to collaborate and contribute to the collective effort to address these challenges.
