In a decisive move to curtail oil theft and economic sabotage, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), under Operation Delta Safe, conducted air strikes on 26 July 2024, resulting in the destruction of 12 illegal refining sites and 2 reservoirs.
In a statement Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet said in Umueze, Abia State, reconnaissance missions identified several illegal refining operations within fenced compounds. This intelligence was promptly shared with ground troops for further action. Additionally, three illegal refining sites concealed under dense vegetation near Owaza were detected and destroyed.

He said the operation continued along the river line to Komkom and Okoloma in Rivers State, where nine more illegal refining sites and two reservoirs were located and obliterated.
Gabkwet added that the presence of these sites within residential compounds highlights the sophistication of the illegal oil refining trade, signaling the need for strategies beyond air strikes to effectively combat this issue.
The Nigerian Air Force emphasizes the severe risks posed by these illegal activities to human health and the environment. The force remains committed to ongoing reconnaissance and destruction missions to minimize crude oil theft and economic sabotage.
