NAF airstrikes target terrorists in Kaduna, Zamfara, destroy illegal refining sites in Rivers, Imo

In a robust response to the recent surge in terrorist activities, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched precision airstrikes against terrorist strongholds in Kaduna and Zamfara States, while also targeting illegal refining sites in Rivers and Imo States.

As part of Operation Whirl Punch, the NAF’s Air Component executed a successful air interdiction mission on August 21, 2024, targeting terrorists in Malum Forest, located in Igabi Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State. This operation followed intelligence reports indicating that terrorists responsible for recent attacks on civilians, abductions, and cattle rustling in Shiroro LGA of Niger State had relocated from Alawa Forest in Niger State to their stronghold in Malum Forest. The airstrikes resulted in the elimination of several terrorists, according to battle damage assessments and local sources.

In a parallel operation, airstrikes were also carried out on terrorist hideouts at Bayan Ruwa in Maradun LGA of Zamfara State. The terrorists, tracked to zinced-roofed structures in a secluded area near a river line, were successfully engaged and neutralized in a series of targeted strikes.

Additionally, the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe conducted patrols over the Niger Delta region, specifically over Ohaji/Egbema in Imo State and Degema and Cawthorne Channel in Rivers State. These patrols uncovered and destroyed over 25 illegal refining sites and overhead tanks used for illicit activities. A significant pipeline leakage was also observed in Greenville, Rivers State, spreading over a 150-meter radius, posing severe environmental risks to vegetation, aquatic habitats, and farmlands.

These operations underscore the NAF’s commitment to eliminating terrorist threats and curbing illegal activities across the country.

The operations were confirmed by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force.
