NAFDAC warns against spread of unregistered, substandard edible oils

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over the growing importation and circulation of substandard and unregistered edible oils across Nigeria.

In Public Alert No. 039/2025, the agency said the warning follows a report from Lebruni Agro Limited, a registered local producer of hygienically processed soybean (Liorga) and palm kernel oils. The company, during an internal market surveillance exercise, uncovered several unregulated brands flooding markets nationwide.

The identified brands include FINO, PUR, OKI, SUPER DELICIEX, and LA JONIC. According to NAFDAC, these products operate through warehousing facilities that support an illegal distribution network.

The agency noted that the adulterated oils—whose sources, production methods, and safety standards are unknown—are being smuggled into the country and widely sold under multiple brand names. They have been spotted in major markets in Onitsha, Aba, Owerri, Warri, Enugu, Port Harcourt, Ikom, Calabar, Lagos (Trade Fair, Okiarin, Ikotun, Mushin), Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Yola, Gombe, Bauchi, Idiroko, Makurdi, and Lafia.

NAFDAC confirmed that the products bear no manufacturer information or NAFDAC registration numbers and do not appear in its official database, making them unsafe for public consumption.

The agency urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspected substandard or unregistered edible oil to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free line 0800-162-3322, or by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
