The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has received the newly appointed Country Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Nigeria, Mr. Parel Ursu, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja.
The visit marked an introductory engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration and aligning strategic priorities to advance Nigeria’s regulatory systems and public health outcomes.
During the meeting, Prof. Adeyeye outlined the agency’s transformation since 2017, highlighting its attainment of WHO Maturity Level 3 (ML3) status, enhanced regulatory systems, and improved quality assurance for medicines through coordinated enforcement and a robust Quality Management System.
Discussions also centred on Nigeria’s transition towards local pharmaceutical manufacturing, the need to balance medicine donations with sustainable domestic production, and ongoing efforts to sanitise the drug distribution system.
Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration as NAFDAC works towards attaining Maturity Level 4 (ML4), expanding its regulatory oversight to medical devices, and strengthening capacity building. The engagement reflects a shared resolve to improve access to safe, quality medicines while fostering a resilient and self-sufficient healthcare system in Nigeria.
