NAOWA president commissions new primary school at Bukavu barracks

The President of the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA), Mrs Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, on December 31, 2025, commissioned a newly constructed NAOWA Primary School at Bukavu Barracks, 3 Brigade, Kano, in a move aimed at strengthening educational opportunities and improving the welfare of military families.

The project was sponsored by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of AA Rano Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Auwalu Abdullahi Rano, and the Executive Director of Tabarakallahu Layout, Alhaji Bashir Tabarakallahu. The school was built with modern learning facilities to provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning.

Speaking at the ceremony as Special Guest of Honour, Major General K.I. Mukhtar (retd), a former General Officer Commanding, 1 Division, Nigerian Army, described the project as a clear demonstration of the Army’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel and their families. He commended the sponsors for what he termed a “selfless service to humanity” and a “gift to future generations,” noting that the initiative would positively transform lives and help shape future leaders.

Major General Mukhtar also praised NAOWA and Headquarters 3 Brigade for maintaining cordial relations with the host community and urged parents and community members to take ownership of the school and support its growth and sustainability.

Representing the NAOWA President at the event, the Zonal Coordinator, NAOWA 3 Brigade Chapter, Mrs Zainab Tukur, said the commissioning of the school reflected NAOWA’s sustained commitment to the education and welfare of children within the barracks and the surrounding host communities. She urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the facility and called on all stakeholders to ensure its proper maintenance.

She expressed appreciation to the project sponsors, praying for divine reward for their generosity, and commended the NAOWA President, Mrs Safiyyah Hassan Shaibu, for her visionary leadership. Mrs Tukur also acknowledged the support of the NAOWA Chairperson, 1 Division, Dr Halima Wase, as well as the efforts of past NAOWA leaders who contributed to the realisation of the project.

Earlier, the Commander, 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Ahmad Tukur, described the new primary school as a significant contribution to human capital development and a reflection of strong community support for the Nigerian Army. He noted that the facility would enhance learning outcomes and contribute to the overall development of pupils.

The project executors, Alhaji Auwalu Rano, represented by the Executive Director of AA Rano Nigeria Limited, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Balarebe, and Alhaji Bashir Tabarakallahu, expressed satisfaction at being part of the initiative, saying the school would bring lasting benefits to the barracks community and positively impact the future of children.

Highlights of the ceremony included a guided tour of the school facilities, cultural and academic displays by pupils of the NAOWA School, group photographs, and the presentation of souvenirs.
