NAPTIP rescues 19 children as Kebbi Governor issues stern warning to child traffickers

In a significant victory against child trafficking, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued 19 underaged children trafficked from Kebbi State to Calabar, Cross River State.

According to his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Yahaya Sarki, Governor Nasir Idris announced the rescue during a press conference on Monday at Government House, Birnin Kebbi, where the children were presented to the media. He praised the collaboration between NAPTIP, the Kebbi State Government, and partner agencies for their coordinated efforts.

Gov. Idris emphasized the state’s unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable children and combating human trafficking. He expressed deep outrage over the ordeal the children had suffered, many of whom were promised education but instead faced forced labor and sexual exploitation. The Governor labeled the situation as “barbaric” and called on parents to be vigilant in safeguarding their children’s welfare.

Vowing to bring child traffickers to justice, Gov. Idris issued a stern warning to those involved in the illegal trade, reiterating that Kebbi State would not tolerate any form of child exploitation. He also assured the rescued children that his administration would provide the necessary support for their recovery.

Misbahu Kaura, Kebbi State Commander of NAPTIP, shared details of the operation, explaining that a tip-off led to the interception of the traffickers as they attempted to transport the children from Zamfara to Calabar. Three suspects have been arrested and are expected to face prosecution. Kaura confirmed that some of the children had endured physical and sexual abuse.

Gov. Idris concluded his remarks by commending all agencies involved in the rescue and reinforcing his administration’s dedication to protecting the rights and well-being of children across Kebbi State.
