NAPTIP, US Department of State hold strategic meeting on human trafficking efforts

The Management of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), led by Director General Binta Adamu Bello, OON, held a productive and impactful session with officials from the U.S. Department of State, led by Matthew Hickey, Deputy Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. The meeting took place on Friday, October 4, 2024, at NAPTIP’s headquarters in Abuja.

Discussions focused on evaluating NAPTIP’s efforts in combating human trafficking in line with the U.S. Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report, as Nigeria prepares for the 2024 edition. Director General Bello highlighted several of the Agency’s key achievements, including the prosecution of high-profile traffickers, victim support initiatives, and increased public awareness campaigns. She emphasized Nigeria’s growing political will to address human trafficking, evidenced by strong government backing of NAPTIP’s efforts.

Bello also touched on policy implementation, collaboration with local and international partners, and tackling cyber-related trafficking crimes. She called for enhanced cooperation from the U.S. Government.

Matthew Hickey commended NAPTIP’s progress and assured continued U.S. support, noting that the Agency’s achievements align closely with the U.S. TIP Report’s standards.
