As part of its ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft and environmental sabotage, personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Delta, under Operation Delta Sanity, uncovered and dismantled an illegal refinery site in Obodo Omadino Community, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, 1 May 2025.
The illegal site, concealed deep within the creeks, comprised 13 large dugout pits used for storing crude oil and several sacks laden with stolen crude. Upon discovery, naval personnel swiftly deactivated the facility, rendering it inoperable and preventing further illicit refining activities.
According to a statement from the Nigerian Navy, the operation is part of intensified maritime security efforts aimed at curbing the persistent menace of illegal oil bunkering and refining, which have long contributed to economic sabotage and environmental degradation in the Niger Delta region.

“The Nigerian Navy remains resolute in its mandate to protect Nigeria’s maritime environment and resources,” the statement read. “This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to dismantling networks of crude oil theft and preserving the integrity of our natural ecosystems.”
The Navy noted that the illicit refining activities not only deprive the nation of vital revenue but also result in widespread pollution, harming local communities and livelihoods dependent on farming and fishing.
Operation Delta Sanity, launched earlier this year, has seen increased patrols, surveillance, and targeted raids across known hotspots of illegal oil activities in Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and other coastal states. The operation aligns with national security strategies to bolster economic stability and safeguard critical energy infrastructure.
The Nigerian Navy has urged residents and community leaders to support security efforts by providing credible information on criminal activities within their areas. It reaffirmed that sustained collaboration between security agencies and the public is crucial to eradicating oil theft and protecting national assets.
