NCC orders immediate reactivation of lines affected by NIN-SIM verification issues

Over the weekend, many telecom subscribers were unable to access their phone lines due to difficulties in verifying their National Identification Numbers (NINs) with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs). This led to the blocking of their numbers by telecom service providers in compliance with NIN-SIM linkage policies.

In a statement NCC Director, Public Affairs Reuben Muoka said the compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM began in December 2020, when the government mandated telecommunication companies to bar unregistered SIM cards and those not linked to NIN. Despite the Commission extending the deadline multiple times, the latest being July 31, 2024, many phone lines remain unverified.

He added that the Federal Government’s objectives for the NIN-SIM linkage include enhancing national security and ensuring an accurate national SIM ownership database. This policy helps verify and protect users’ identities while supporting a robust digital economy.

Given the recent disruptions, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has directed all operators to reactivate lines disconnected over the weekend. This reactivation is temporary, allowing consumers more time to verify their NINs with their SIMs. The public is urged to complete this process promptly to maintain access to their services.
