The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched a coordinated manhunt to apprehend six escaped inmates following a breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa, Osun State, caused by heavy rainfall.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar confirmed that the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. He noted that the weather-related breach initially resulted in the escape of seven inmates, one of whom has since been recaptured.
In response, the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the escape.
“The Service is working in close collaboration with other security agencies and local community leaders to ensure the swift recapture of the fleeing inmates,” Abubakar stated.
