The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Monday, August 28, 2023 issued a response, addressing recent media reports regarding the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Valuation process. The NCS emphasized that these reports were both misleading and intended to distort the truth, potentially misinforming the public.
According to Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada, the National Public Relations Officer, while acknowledging the mention of a circular on “examination and release of used vehicles,” he expressed regret that the accurate context of the situation had been overlooked. He clarified that the VIN Valuation Process continues to operate fully and effectively. The circular in question specifically pertains to imported used vehicles that are equipped with trim numbers.
Maiwada highlighted the significance of these trim numbers in distinguishing various versions or tiers within a particular car model. These trim numbers delineate diverse configurations, features, and equipment levels associated with the model. Additionally, different trim levels offer distinct technological advancements, interior and exterior features, and occasionally, unique engine options.
For example, a car model might encompass trim levels like “Base,” “Sport,” “Luxury,” and “Premium.” Each of these trim levels could offer varying combinations of attributes, such as premium leather seats, advanced infotainment systems, upgraded wheels, and enhanced safety features, among other enhancements. This inevitably results in an increased value for the vehicle as compared to the base model.
Maiwada underlined the NCS’s commitment to fairness and accuracy. He conveyed that for imported used vehicles with trim numbers, the NCS requires them to undergo valuation at the Valuation Seat subsequent to a comprehensive examination. This meticulous process is designed to determine the precise Customs value of the vehicle.
Maiwada encouraged the general public to dismiss the misleading reports and invited individuals to engage with the diverse Customs Formations situated throughout the nation for any further clarification or information they might seek.
