NCYP hails Tinubu on Forest Guard revamp, urges community-led rollout

The Northern Christian Youth Professionals (NCYP) has commended President Bola Tinubu for fulfilling a major campaign promise — the revitalization of the Forest Guard — as outlined on page 9 of his Renewed Hope manifesto.

In a statement signed by its National President, Isaac Abrak, the group described the development as a significant stride towards addressing security threats posed by violent groups operating within Nigeria’s forest reserves.

“We commend President Tinubu for not only keeping his promise but also for heeding the long-standing calls by our organisation and other Nigerians concerned about rural security,” the statement read.

Abrak noted that the revitalization of the Forest Guard was central to NCYP’s advocacy during the 2023 election campaigns. “We assured vulnerable communities in the North that President Tinubu would establish community-based security outfits and recruit local youth to defend their forests. Today, we are grateful to witness the realization of that vision,” he said.

Looking ahead, NCYP called for a transparent and community-led implementation process. “We urge the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Federal Ministry of Environment to prioritize local recruitment from communities living near Nigeria’s 1,129 forest areas. These residents possess deep knowledge of the terrain and are best suited to tackle criminal elements.”

The group further warned against politicizing the recruitment process. “The Forest Guard must not become a tool for political patronage or a safe haven for individuals with questionable character. Community leaders and security agencies like the DSS should play a key role in vetting candidates.”

According to the group, an initial recruitment target of 185,000 youths — 5,000 from each state including the FCT — would both strengthen national security and create employment opportunities.

“This initiative may be our last viable line of defense against terrorism and banditry,” Abrak stated, urging that recruits be trained with strong values of patriotism, discipline, and national unity.

The NCYP pledged continued support to the Tinubu administration, especially the offices of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Environment, in ensuring successful deployment of the Forest Guard. “With sincere implementation, this initiative can become a cornerstone for securing Nigeria’s forests and protecting its people,” the statement concluded.
